How long does an uncontested divorce take in NJ?
Short answer
When your papers are complete and your spouse is served quickly, it can be about 6–8 weeks after filing. Across New Jersey, uncontested divorces usually take 2 to 6 months. Most of the time goes to serving your spouse, the 35-day response window, and the court's calendar.

Step 1 · Same day
Papers prepared
Bring your information and documents, and we prepare your complete divorce package the same day. If something is missing, it waits until you bring it.
What makes it slower
Your spouse is hard to find or won't sign
Then the papers have to be served by the sheriff or a process server. This is the most common delay.
Your spouse lives in another country
Serving papers abroad takes longer. We prepare the documents for this too.
Missing information or forms
If the court finds something missing, it asks for it to be fixed before the divorce is final.
A busy county court
Each county sets its own calendar. Some move faster than others.

Your spouse signs the Acknowledgment of Service
This is the fastest way to notify them. No sheriff needed.

Do you have to go to court?
Often, no. Since 2025, New Jersey courts can finish many uncontested divorces on the papers, without anyone going to court. If the judge asks for a hearing, you go once, briefly. Your spouse does not have to come.
